The Westboro Baptist Church is coming to American University to picket with their anti-gay signs and “God hates fags” message because of the school’s support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students.

Fred Phelps and his group travel all across the United States spreading their message of hate and lies about LGBT people.

However, when the Westboro Baptist Church comes to American University to protest, they will actually be raising money to help ensure LGBT acceptance and equality on campus. Oh, the irony!

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The Westboro Baptist Church is scheduled to protest for 45 minutes, from 4:00 pm to 4:45 pm, on January 14, 2011 at American University.
  • We are collecting donations for every minute Westboro Baptist Church protests to benefit American University Queers & Allies, the school’s LGBTQ group. The longer Westboro Baptist Church protests, the more money they will raise.
  • Pledge by the minute. Choose any amount to contribute for every minute Westboro Baptist Church protests.
  • Or pledge a flat rate for the entire time Westboro Baptist Church is to protest

During a three month trek across the United States in an effort to promote tolerance and equality, Chris Mason, Founder of Phelps-A-Thon.com, stopped in Topeka, Kansas to visit the Westboro Baptist Church.  Concealing his activist identity, He sat down for a conversation with Shirley Phelps, the daughter of Fred Phelps and new leader of the group, to get a better understanding of why the groups feels the need to spread hate.

In this clip, Chris asks Shirley Phelps her opinion of the Phelps-A-Thon counter-protests that, unbeknownst to her, he organizes and promotes.
